Boom in Mobile Commerce a Boon for Developers

As Mobile Payments Today reported, a just-released KPMG report predicts that mobile payments will reach $900 billion globally by 2015 – a mere three years out. That’s extraordinary growth. The report also noted that NFC will make up 37 percent of all mobile payments.

While mobile payments give consumers added convenience, the really exciting part is that new mobile payments technologies like NFC will fuel a new explosion in mobile applications.

These technologies give developers a nearly blank canvas on which to create and a box of new tools and capabilities to work with. Given the phenomenal growth of the mobile economy and the massive amounts of commerce that mobile payments are expected to drive, it is an amazing time to be a mobile app developer.

What type of apps will we see and which ones will be the most popular? Who knows—it’s impossible to predict. But it will be exciting to see how it all unfolds.

m-Coolness: Wired and Lexus NFC Print Ads

NFC-based mobile commerce is barely in its infancy, but already all types of companies are starting to experiment with it.

Check this out – Lexus is using NFC in a print advertisement in the April issue of WIRED. Readers with an NFC equipped device simply tap the ad to see a video demo of Lexus apps.

Once mobile commerce matures and NFC becomes pervasive, there’s sooo much more Lexus could do with this. For example, once you tap the ad with your phone, you could be given an invite for a personal test drive at the nearest Lexus showroom. Once in there, you could tap different parts of the car on the show floor to get more details about specific features. You could also imagine building your own car right in the showroom (like you do online on car company websites). And as you do that, the dealer could push personalized promotions to you based on the models, features and specifications you’re most interested in.

Yes, you could also make your down payment with your phone when you’re ready to buy, but that is really beside the point. Providing a superior and highly personalized, service-oriented experience for the customer is the main event, not to mention the customer intelligence the dealer and Lexus would gain about car buyer behavior and preferences.

This is an exciting time in mCommerce, and it’s great to see innovators such as Wired and Lexus start to dabble in it.

10 Reasons Why NFC Will Succeed

Why I quit my old job and came to work for ViVOtech.

The research made me jump ship. Six months on the job has only confirmed that I made the right decision.

There is now no question whatsoever in my mind that near field communication (NFC) is going to change forever how we shop, travel and interact with others.

Before ViVOtech I had zero payments experience, but was dawn by NFC technology’s varied applications. And, earlier in my career I had spent six years at CNET managing the Cell Phone channel among others, and thereby came to love all things mobile. So, understanding how mCommerce will make eCommerce pale by comparison was easy.

Smart phones have become so versatile, extending beyond voice, text, or browsing into social, finance, marketing, and payments to start.  Just look at a few mobile technology advancements announced this week at Mobile World Congress: a 41 megapixel camera (not a typo), a built-in projector for mobile presentations. Wild!

But, I digress.

Here’s my list of 10 reasons I’m convinced NFC and mCommerce will succeed:
