South's WirelessWallet Trial Is A Success: Consumers Say They're
Ready For Wireless M-Commerce
Company Slated To Offer Technology To Customers In
Early 2008
JACKSON,
Miss. - (September 6, 2007) – Cellular South, the
nation's largest privately held wireless provider, today announced
it has concluded its successful WirelessWallet consumer trial, in
which a select group of consumers tested this ground-breaking mobile
commerce technology that enables consumers to make purchases and
payments using their cell phones. Cellular South's three month trial
was the nation's first multi-city trial ever conducted by a wireless
provider. The completion of the trial further strengthens the company's
position as a wireless innovator driving m-commerce adoption. The
commercial launch of WirelessWallet is slated for early 2008.
A post-trial survey found that 87 percent of WirelessWallet testers
are interested in using the mobile payment technology when it becomes
available to Cellular South customers. The survey, conducted by
Insights Research Group also revealed that more than 75 percent
of testers were satisfied with their WirelessWallet transactions,
and the vast majority of participants said it was easy and convenient
to use, as well as being an innovative method for making everyday
payments and purchases. "The conclusion of this successful
trial helps secure Cellular South's leadership position in driving
m-commerce innovation and full adoption," said Suzy Hays, senior
vice president of marketing and sales. "By working closely
with our trial participants as part of our broader-scale customer
panel, we are poised to create a robust and easy-to-use experience
that will spur widespread WirelessWallet adoption, while ensuring
that the commercial product will be the best, most reliable mobile
payment service for our customers."
The three-month trial of WirelessWallet, conducted in partnership
with Bank of America, ViVOtech and Mpact, Inc., tested the new technology
using handsets from Kyocera Wireless with more than 75 participant
customers in Memphis, Tenn., and Jackson, Miss. – making it
the nation's first and only multi-city WirelessWallet trial. The
trial was also the first community-wide m-commerce test, which enabled
participants to use the technology at multiple retail locations
throughout the trial cities using MasterCard® PayPass™,
as well as one of the first to successfully test the secure over-the-air
download of credit card accounts.
"We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to team up with
Cellular South to test the WirelessWallet service and even more
excited about its successful results," said John Suchanec,
senior vice president of product development at Bank of America.
The Cellular South WirelessWallet program is part of a suite of
innovative, consumer-focused m-commerce solutions the company offers
and is developing. Earlier this year, Cellular South was the nation's
first wireless provider to introduce its new mobile payment service
called Obopay, which allows customers to instantly and effortlessly
receive and send money directly from their wireless device.
"Wireless started with the phone call, then e-mail and text
messages, then pictures and videos, then live television and movies.
Now suddenly it's about using the cell phone like a credit card
for banking and shopping," said Jeff Kagan, wireless and telecom
industry analyst. "This is the early stage of what will become
a very large and important part of the wireless industry and Cellular
South is the U.S. wireless leader at the forefront of this exciting
new area of the wireless industry."
